Grain Handling and Yard Work Equipment for Row-Crop Farms

Grain handling is a dozen small jobs stacked on one another. Cleaning the pit apron, pushing piles, moving totes and seed, feeding the dryer, loading trucks between rains, then scraping the lot when the snow comes. We set up Ohio and Indiana farms with machines that carry all of it.

A typical row-crop fleet here runs around seven machines.

The loader tractor runs the yard

Most of the grain handling work on a farm yard is loader work. Scraping the pad, pushing spilled grain back to the pit, setting totes, moving augers and pallets, handling snow in January. A cab utility tractor with a loader on the front does all of that and still has a hitch and PTO for the cart, the auger and the mower. That is why about half the operators we see already keep one close to the bins.

Power for carts and augers

When the combine is rolling, the yard tractor cannot be the only tractor. You need weight and hydraulics on the grain cart, steady PTO for the auger, and enough road speed to keep trucks turning. A row-crop tractor sized to your acres handles cart duty during harvest and then goes back to tillage and hauling. Matching that horsepower to your cart and your hills is the conversation we would rather have than a spec sheet.

Buy new or used, get the same people

Around 55% of what farms here buy is used, and we are fine with that. A well chosen used loader tractor puts capability in the yard now and leaves cash for the bin site. Either way, we stock parts for this equipment and our technicians are trained on it. Koenig has been local and family-owned since 1904, so the advice you get is attached to our name in your community. We come to you with solutions.

Questions we get on this job

Can a loader tractor really handle grain pile cleanup?

Yes, and it is the most common setup we see on farms in Ohio and Indiana. A utility tractor with a loader and the right bucket scrapes the pad, pushes grain back to the pit and still hooks to the auger. About half the operators we work with already run one.

How much tractor do I need for my grain cart?

It depends on cart size, your ground and how far you move between fields. We would rather walk your yard and look at the cart than guess from a chart. We will arrange a demo on your place so you can pull it loaded before you decide.

Is it worth buying used for yard work?

Often yes. Around 55% of what farms here buy is used, and a yard machine that mostly runs a loader is a sensible place to spend less. We stock parts for this equipment and our technicians are trained on it either way.
