Right-of-Way and Ditch Brush Equipment for Ohio and Indiana Municipalities
Road crews cut miles of shoulder, ditch line and back slope, and the brush is never just grass. There are woody stems, washed-in rock, guardrail posts and traffic a few feet away. We spec cutters and tractors for that reality, not for an open field.
Build the cutter for brush
A light cutter will get through the first pass of the season and start failing on the second. Right-of-way work means stems, saplings and hidden debris, so we point crews toward heavy duty decks with thick sidewalls, a driveline sized for the load and a stump jumper that takes the hit. The FC10R Heavy Duty and FC15R Heavy Duty are built for this kind of abuse, and the FC20R covers wider open runs where hours matter more than trimming.
Match tractor to cutter honestly
Most disappointment on this job traces back to a tractor that is short on horsepower or rear weight for the cutter hung behind it. On slopes and soft ditch shoulders that gets unsafe fast. A 5075E or 5090E handles a ten-foot class cutter in most county work, while a 5105M, 5120M or 5130M gives you the reserve for continuous heavy brush. Cab models make long summer days on a gravel shoulder far more bearable.
Reaching past the shoulder
Some ditch banks and fence lines cannot be reached with a rear-mounted deck without putting a wheel where you do not want it. That is where boom mower work earns its place, and where an offset or semi-mount cutter lets the tractor stay on solid ground while the deck rides the slope. We will walk your route with you and figure out which sections need reach and which are straight pull-type mileage.

How much tractor do I need for a ten-foot cutter?
For sustained brush work we generally want real horsepower at the PTO plus enough rear weight and tire to stay planted on a ditch shoulder. A 5090E or 5100E covers most county routes, and the 5105M through 5130M give reserve for heavy continuous cutting. We will size it against your actual routes, not a chart.
Can we run a boom mower on a tractor we already own?
Sometimes, and sometimes the hydraulics or the rear weight will not support it safely. Tell us the tractor you have and the banks you need to reach, and we will give you a straight answer. If the pairing is wrong we will say so rather than sell you a problem.
Do you support this equipment after the sale?
Yes. We stock parts for these tractors and cutters, and our technicians are trained on them. Since 1904 this has been a family-owned business serving Ohio and Indiana, and we attach our reputation to the advice we give.
Is buying used a reasonable option for a township budget?
It can be. Around 15% of the operators we work with buy used, and for a secondary cutter or a backup tractor that often makes sense. For the machine running your primary route all summer, we usually steer Customers toward new so the downtime risk sits somewhere else.
Can we see one work on our own road before we buy?
Yes. We will arrange a demo on your site so you can run the cutter on your actual ditch line and slopes. That tells you more in an hour than any spec sheet will.
