Feeding is a twice-a-day job that does not wait on weather. You need a tractor that starts cold, lifts a wet round bale over a gate or feeder ring, and handles tight turns in a muddy lot without tearing up the ground.
Match Lift to Your Bales
A wet four by five round bale weighs far more than most people guess, and the number that matters is lift capacity at full height, not at the ground. The 5075E and 5090E handle typical round bale work comfortably, while the 5105M and 5120M give you headroom for heavier bales and higher stacking. If you are mostly feeding small squares and dry hay, a 5060E or 5067E is plenty of tractor.
Cab or Open Station
Winter feeding is when this decision gets made. An open station tractor costs less and gets in and out of low barn doors, and for operators who feed in short bursts it is the right call. But if you are out for an hour every morning in January wind, a cab pays for itself in how willing you are to do the job well. The 5090E and 5100E come both ways, so the choice is yours without changing tractors.
The Loader Is the Tool
The tractor moves, but the loader does the work. Matching the loader to the tractor matters more than horsepower on paper, because a mismatched pair either runs out of lift or makes the front end light. The 520M and 540M pair well with the 5E and 5M tractors most livestock operators here run. Add a bale spear and you have a feeding machine that also handles manure, bedding, and gravel the rest of the year.

What size tractor do I need to lift round bales?
For typical four by five round bales, a 5075E or 5090E with a matched loader handles daily feeding well. If your bales run large and wet, or you stack two high, step up to a 5105M or 5120M. We will come out and look at your bales and your lot before recommending anything.
Is a used tractor a reasonable choice for feeding?
Yes, and a good share of the feeding tractors we see in Ohio and Indiana were bought used. Feeding is steady, moderate-load work that a well-maintained used tractor handles for years. What matters most is loader condition and hydraulic health, and our technicians can tell you what you are looking at.
Can I use the same tractor for bedding and manure?
That is exactly how most livestock operators here use it. A 5E or 5M with a loader swaps from a bale spear to a bucket or grapple in minutes, so one machine covers feeding, bedding, manure, and gravel. Sizing the loader correctly up front is what makes that work.
Can I try one on my own place first?
