Firewood and Storm Cleanup Equipment for Wooded Acreage
A wooded lot makes work on its own schedule. Limbs come down in a July storm, a standing dead ash needs to be firewood before winter, and the brush pile grows either way. We help landowners across Ohio and Indiana put together a tractor, loader and grapple setup that handles all of it.
The grapple does the heavy work
A chainsaw makes the cuts, but a grapple on the loader is what actually clears a lot. It picks up a tangled limb pile in one grab, carries a log to the splitting area, and stacks brush without anyone bending over. Match the loader to the tractor: a 300E or 320R on a smaller compact, a 400E, 440R or 520M when you are lifting green hardwood. That pairing changes a two day cleanup into an afternoon.
Size the tractor for wood weight
Green oak and hickory are heavier than people expect, and a wooded lot means slopes, ruts and soft ground. We usually steer firewood Customers toward a 2032R or 2038R for smaller acreage with tight tree spacing, and a 3032E, 3038E or 3033R when there is real log handling and a chipper on the back. The extra weight and hydraulic capacity keep the front end honest when the loader is loaded and you are heading uphill.
Deal with brush where it falls
The pile of limbs is the part that lingers. A Frontier three point wood chipper runs off the tractor PTO and turns that pile into mulch you can spread on trails and beds, so nothing gets hauled to the road. Once the lot is clear, a rotary cutter keeps the understory and trail edges from closing back in. Pick the FC15M or FC15R Heavy Duty for saplings and woody regrowth rather than a light duty deck.

What size tractor do I need for firewood on a wooded lot?
For most wooded acreage in our area, a 2032R or 2038R handles firewood and light cleanup well. If you plan to run a chipper and lift green hardwood logs regularly, step up to a 3032E, 3038E or 3033R. We would rather have you sized correctly the first time than fighting a machine that is light in the front end.
Can a compact tractor really run a wood chipper?
Yes, as long as the PTO horsepower matches the chipper. Frontier three point chippers are built for this class of tractor. We will confirm the pairing against your specific tractor and the limb diameter you actually deal with before you buy anything.
Do I need a grapple, or will pallet forks work?
Forks move split and stacked wood fine, but they cannot hold a tangled brush pile. A grapple closes on the load, which is what makes storm cleanup fast. Most Customers who start with forks add a grapple after their first big storm.
Can I try this equipment before I buy it?
