Rotary Tillers for Gardens, Food Plots and Seedbeds
Ohio and Indiana ground is heavy, and a food plot cut into old sod does not turn into a seedbed on one pass. We size the tiller to the tractor's PTO horsepower and to your soil, so you get a clean bed instead of a stalled machine.
Size the tiller to the tractor
A rotary tiller pulls hard, and width is the whole decision. A 1 Series tractor handles a narrower tiller comfortably in garden ground, while a 2 or 3 Series carries a wider tiller through a food plot without slowing down. We look at your PTO horsepower, tire width and soil before we quote a width, because a tiller that is too wide just makes you crawl and chew up fuel.
Two passes beat one
Good seedbeds in this part of the country are built in stages. The first pass breaks the crust and buries residue, then you let it dry a day and come back shallower to level and firm the bed. Trying to do it in a single deep pass in wet clay gives you clods that stay clods all season. Tiller depth control is what makes that second pass worth taking.
One tractor, several jobs
Very few Customers buy a tractor only to till. The same machine carries a loader for compost, soil and gravel, and a rotary cutter to knock down a plot before the tiller ever touches it. That is why we usually build a package rather than sell a single implement. What size tractor do I need to run a rotary tiller?
It depends on tiller width and your soil. A 1 Series like the 1025R handles a narrower tiller in worked garden ground, while heavier clay or a wider tiller points toward a 2032R or 3032E. We would rather see the ground before we recommend a width.
Can I till sod straight into a food plot?
You can, but cut it down first with a rotary cutter such as the FC15E so the tiller is not fighting standing growth. Then plan on more than one pass. Sod breaks up far better after it has been cut short and given a little time.
