A straight, spec-by-spec look for gator buyers across Ohio and Indiana. The numbers are only half the decision.

Is the John Deere Gator RSX860M right for you?

The Customer looking at the RSX860M is usually someone who needs a side-by-side that genuinely works on their property, not just one that looks fast on a spec sheet. Yes, the Can-Am Commander 800 advertises 71 horsepower against the RSX860M's 62 hp, and it picks up a small edge in suspension travel at 10 inches versus 9. Those are real numbers, and we won't pretend otherwise. But for the Customer who is hauling materials, towing equipment, and covering ground across a farm or large property, the rest of the comparison tells a different story.

The RSX860M carries 500 pounds in a purpose-built cargo box with published dimensions, while the Commander splits its cargo between an upper deck rated at 400 pounds and a lower rated at 200 pounds. The Gator also holds 7.4 gallons of fuel compared to the Commander's 10 liters, which is roughly 2.6 gallons. That means fewer stops and more time working. When you get into 4WD, the RSX860M uses a true locking front differential with electronic engagement. The Commander's Visco-Lok system is automatic and reactive, not driver-controlled. On tough terrain, that distinction matters.
